JUNE KEY DELTA COMMUNITY CENTER, dedicated to the energy and foresight of Portland, Oregon educator June Key, is a Living Building, a "green" building project developed by African American women, Portland sorority members of the Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, that will provide a community center that sustains the needs of the multi-cultural neighborhood it serves, encouraging sound and healthy social, educational, artistic, economic, and environmental development and awareness.

The property on which the completed community center, June Key Delta Community Center, stands is owned (without debt) by Portland Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Piedmont Rose Connection, Inc.  The site is  a renovation of a standard 1960's style concrete and metal building gas station with asphalt pavement (see photo, above left) and will serve as a demonstration project highlighting how a small, nonprofit organization uses sustainable building practices to create a "living building."

The Delta organization's service activities (including education, physical/mental health, economic development and international development)  could not be accomodated in the current building (pictured top, left, above) for lack of space, city fire bureau regulations, and the general deterioration of the building.  In researching ways to renovate or remodel the site, the Delta organizaton, wishing to accomplish this task in a responsible manner, chose to create a "living building" (highest level of sustainable building).  Note that this site is constantly "under construction" and some information may change as the project progresses.

Support the June Key Delta Center's living building challenge by, for example, attending a lecture to take place May 5-7 in Seattle, Washington, and becoming educated about how this project has been reaching for excellence in sustainability and, at the same time, achieving the funding necessary for its success.  Mark Nye, the Center's architect, Chris Poole-Jones, Project Coordinator, builder Andrew Colas and others will be presenters at this event.  For more information, see the link below:

RECENT INTERVIEW BY PORTLAND CENTER STAGE with Chris Poole-Jones and Evie Crowell about partnership betwen the center and the show, Oklahoma!:

JUNE KEY DELTA COMMUNITY CENTER
was one of the twenty-two tour stops of the
BUILD IT GREEN! HOME TOUR 2011,
on Saturday, September 24.
This was a self-guided tour of 22 green remodels and new homes around the Portland metropolitan area.  Participants started and stoppped where and when they chose, chatting with homeowners, designers, do-it-yourselfers and contractors about solar panels, ecoroofs (green roofs), rainwater harvesting, natural landscaping, affordable housing, water and energy conservation, natural building materials, alternative construction techniques and much more!  People picked up some great ideas for current or future homes.
