Portland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an organization of 250
college-educated women committed to public service. The mission of the organization is to create community projects
for the public good in the following areas:
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is inclusive in the community it serves, honoring and celebrating
diversity. The Portland Alumnae Chapter will not discriminate based on race, color, religion, national origin, age,
or financial status in any of its activities or services. The Piedmont Rose Connection, Inc. foundation is a non-profit
organization that supports the activities of the Portland Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Named JUNE KEY DELTA COMMUNITY CENTER, the property is owned (without debt) by the Delta organization.
It was donated to the organization by educator June Key. Obtained in 1992, it is located in North Portland at the
intersection of North Albina and North Ainsworth, across the street from Peninsula Park, one of the oldest parks in the city.
Using sustainable building practices, the plan is to completely renovate this former brownfield site, a standard 1960's
style concrete and metal gas station surrounded by asphalt pavement , for use as a community center.
The "living building" concept takes this project to its highest possible environmental level and serves
as a demonstration project, highlighting how a small, non-profit organization implements sustainable building practices
using recycled and donated materials. The project demonstrates how a small non-profit can creating a living building
composed of cargo containers, salvage glass and recycled construction materials using 50% to 70% recycled technology.
The point of the renovation is to have a NetZero impact on the environment. The project was one of two federal EPA grants
awarded in Oregon in 2008 and has attracted local and national attention from governmental agencies that assisted with
environmental testing, water retention processes, and landscape design. The City of Portland Environmental Services
Department awarded the project a grant to test the site for brownfield residue; those tests have cleared the site for construction.
