June Key Delta Community Center "Green" Demonstration Project
DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC.
A SISTERHOOD BUILDING SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES THROUGH PUBLIC SERVICE
June Key Delta Community Center
at 5940 N Albina St., in Portland, Oregon, is the dream of the Portland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Incorporated: To increase its existing meeting space, an abandoned gas station and community eye sore, into
a sustainable, environmentally friendly center for community use. The green building project is to use sustainable
practices such as shipping cargo containers, salvaged glass and recycled building materials.
The community demonstration project will provide community organizations, agencies and individuals with a site, a "living
building" which uses as much as 50% to 70% recycled technology. The organization plans to use the project to demonstrate
to or even partner with other groups and/or projects, making them aware of the feasibility of building construction using
recycling and renewable building sources for small and medium sized community building projects.
YOU CAN HELP!
The Intergenerational Garden provides an opportunity to join the growing agriculture movement. Sorors
and community members will both learn and teach about food production and general gardening, while also enjoying the
fruits (and veggies) of their labor.
